Welcome to Garden Railway Realism online resource

This is a resource for all who model railways in an outdoor setting.

Our Aim

A real railway in miniature: realistic operation of realistic trains in a realistic landscape.

Outdoor modelling has the potential to achieve an uncanny sense of realism, in photographs and movies and when present in person. We turn the practicalities of nature to our advantage by using natural light and sounds, seasons and weather, trees and plants to give an immediacy and impact that could never be boxed-up indoors.

We set out broad principles describing ways we believe this can be achieved, leaving each individual modeller to select their own personal emphases. While we accept compromise as a fact of life, whether for technical, circumstantial or financial reasons, we aim to minimise its impact on the overall effect.

There are plenty of other ways to enjoy garden railways. Our particular interest is in achieving maximum realism, and naturally we will be delighted if these pages inspire you.

We hope that you will find ideas and techniques that increase the impression of realism of your garden models. Please feel free to download what you will. All items are Copyright-free for non-commercial uses*, but we do ask you to acknowledge the source if you post them elsewhere – thanks.

We welcome constructive feedback and offers of contributions via our contact email address.
